Scratching Behavior

Cats have a natural urge to scratch in order to remove dead bits of nails and to mark their territory.  It’s also part of their exercise routine! You may need to experiment with different types of scratching posts/boards to find which one/s your cat prefers. For instance, some cats prefer vertical scratching surfaces and others prefer horizontal. Some prefer corrugated cardboard, while others prefer sisal or carpet.  To encourage your cat to use the scratching surface you may want to try covering it with catnip.  You should also make sure the post or board is well stabilized so it doesn’t wobble around when your cat is trying to use it.

If your cat is using furniture as a scratching post try putting double-sided tape or a deterrent spray on the areas of interest.
